About Keyworth Cricket Club

The first reference to the men of Keyworth playing cricket can be found in the 15 June 1815 issue of the Nottingham Review - Keyworth defeating neighbour village Bunny in a two innings match played on Tuesday 13 June 1815. Keyworth scoring 24 & 81, Bunny 59 & 36.

Cricket blossomed in the South Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire border area when between 1810 and 1820 most of the villages formed a team and it is known that Keyworth played their early matches on the Rectory Field (the current home ground) and stayed there until the 1870’s when they moved on to a field on Bunny Lane immediately behind the present Davill’s (Greenhays) Farm and Keyworth became one of the best village teams in the County with many of their players achieving fame far beyond the village border and it is said that the village produced no fewer than forty professional players and coaches at this time, some of whom played for Nottinghamshire CCC, including the ‘great’ William Dick Attewell and his relatives Thomas and Walter, also Arthur Pike, Thomas Simpson and Matthew William Wright, not to mention other ‘stars’ such as William Lane Pike, Josh Simpson, William Tomlinson, Thomas Armstrong, William Widdowson and Harry Bolton. All from a village with a population of around 900 people by the late 1900s and when the Nottinghamshire Cricket Association was formed in 1890, Keyworth finish fourth in the first season of the Senior Alliance League and were South Notts Cricket League Champions in 1922.

If this taste of the early history of the club is of interest please read our comprehensive story in the HISTORY SECTION of this website which takes you through the journey from 1815 to the present day and relates it to other events taking place over the near 200 years of cricket in Keyworth.
